How to sell Magic cards on Shopify: singles, conditions and stock that stays right

8 min read · Updated September 15, 2026

Shopify is a good storefront for a card shop, but it was built for t-shirts, not for 40,000 printings with five conditions each. This guide covers how to structure singles so buyers can find them, how to keep stock honest when you also sell on Mana Pool or eBay, and where the common mistakes are.

Why singles are hard on Shopify

A Shopify product has a title, a description and up to three option axes. A Magic card has a name, a set, a collector number, a finish (nonfoil, foil, etched), a language and a condition. Shops that create one product per card and stuff condition into the title end up with duplicates and search results full of near-identical lines. Shops that create one product per condition cannot show a buyer that a cheaper Lightly Played copy exists.

The structure that works: one product per printing (name + set + collector number), with condition, finish and language as variants. A buyer searching “Sol Ring Commander Masters” lands on one page and sees every copy you have, priced by condition. That is exactly the shape LGSTome creates when you publish to Shopify, and it is worth using even if you build products by hand.

Set the store up before the first card

  1. Confirm your default locationSettings → Locations in Shopify admin. The location marked as your default is where online orders ship from and where card inventory should live. If you sell in person too, keep POS and online stock at the same location or you will fight Shopify’s fulfillment logic. See the guide on Shopify locations for card inventory.
  2. Pick a product template for cardsMost themes let you create an alternate product template. Use one that shows the variant picker prominently and hides fields cards do not need, such as size charts. LGSTome reads your live theme’s templates so you can select the card template as a publishing default.
  3. Decide on collections and tagsA collection per game (Magic, Pokémon) and automated collections by tag (set code, rarity, foil) give buyers a way to browse. Set the collection and tags once as publishing defaults so every new product lands in the right place.
  4. Choose your sales channelsOnline Store at minimum. If you use Shopify POS, publish to it as well so in-store staff can look up singles. Publishing defaults in LGSTome apply the channels to every product it creates.
  5. Connect an inventory toolInstall the LGSTome app from the Shopify App Store, or create an account at lgstome.com and connect the store from Settings → Shopify. The order webhook is registered for you.

Get your cards in

If you already have a Shopify catalog, import it first. LGSTome matches existing products to printings by name, set and collector number and brings quantities and images along, so you are not starting from zero. Anything it cannot match is listed for you to resolve or skip.

For a binder that has never been listed, a CSV from Manabox, Collectr or a TCGplayer collection export is the fastest route. Each row matches its exact printing first, so a Commander Masters Sol Ring never becomes a Revised one. Cards without a price are never published, which keeps unpriced bulk off your store until you decide what it is worth.

Price against the market, then publish

Every card in LGSTome shows the current TCGplayer market price and Mana Pool low next to your price. For a first pass, the repricing wizard sets everything relative to market in one move. After that, the nightly auto-repricer keeps prices moving with the market and publishes the changes to Shopify on its own, then emails you a summary of what moved.

When you publish, one Shopify product is created per printing with a variant per condition, finish and language, and inventory is set at your default location. Publishing again updates price and quantity in place. It never creates a duplicate, and your edits to titles, descriptions and theme settings are left alone.

Stop overselling when you sell elsewhere too

The moment a card is on Shopify and Mana Pool or eBay, you can sell the same copy twice. The fix is a single inventory that hears about every sale and updates the others. When a Shopify order arrives, LGSTome removes the sold copies from stock and takes them down on the other marketplaces within seconds. When a copy sells on Mana Pool or eBay, the Shopify quantity comes down the same way. A daily audit compares what each marketplace advertises with what you own and corrects anything advertising too many.

For the reasoning behind that design, read how to stop overselling cards across marketplaces.

Fulfill pickup and shipping orders

  • Pickup orders: mark Ready for pickup when the cards are pulled, then Picked up when the customer collects. Shopify’s fulfillment order follows automatically.
  • Shipping orders: buy a USPS label or enter tracking, then mark shipped to fulfill the order in Shopify. Print packing slips and #10 envelopes for cheap singles in a batch.
  • Orders without cards: point-of-sale sales of sealed product or snacks are hidden by the “only orders with inventory items” filter and never touch card inventory.

Mistakes we see most

  • Putting condition in the product title instead of a variant, then wondering why search is a wall of duplicates.
  • Listing without a price “to fix later”. Unpriced cards sell for the wrong number or not at all. Keep them unpublished until priced.
  • Stocking an app-managed or secondary location. Online buyers see Sold out even though the cards exist.
  • Repricing by hand once a quarter. Card prices move weekly; nightly rules keep you competitive without the busywork.
  • Running two inventories, one per marketplace. Every mismatch becomes an apology email.

Questions

Do I need Shopify Plus to sell card singles?

No. A Basic Shopify plan handles thousands of products with variants. The limits that matter are variants per product, which conditions and finishes stay well within, and your own inventory size.

How many products can I have on Shopify?

Shopify does not publish a hard product limit for standard stores, but bulk creation is rate-limited, so a large first push takes a while. LGSTome runs pushes in the background and reports progress per batch.

Can I sell Pokémon and Lorcana singles the same way?

Yes. The one-product-per-printing structure works for every trading card game, and LGSTome publishes Magic, Pokémon, Lorcana, One Piece and Riftbound cards to Shopify from the same inventory.
